This is the most important equipment in compressed air system at the same time most neglected one, which controls moisture entry in to operating area. In context of Indian Humid and dusty environment it has great importance. If overlooked or ignored then it makes you run like anything without being suspicious about it. If properly treated then it is very good friend.
It's function is to cool compressed air to ambient temperature.
The type of coolers are air cooled and water cooled.
Air cooled cooler consists of nest
of finned tubes through which compressed air flows and
over which a forced draught of cold air passed by means
of fan assembly. Normally outlet air temperature is
12 to 15 deg C over ambient temperature for properly
designed coolers.
In water cooled after cooler steel
shell houses nest of tubes with water circulating either
inside or outside tubes with compressed air on the other
side, usually arranged so that their flow is in opposite
direction through the cooler. With water cooled cooler
it is possible to ensure that the temperature of the
outlet air is no more than 10 deg C above cooling water
inlet temperature.
